    Creating the ideal environment

Creating atmospheres, crafting experiences, designing interiors? Focusing not on the grand scale, but on the details and the ephemeral? Using the space itself as a creative playground? Even though we usually talk about enclosed spaces, the possibilities of interior design are virtually limitless, and its impact is undeniable. Interior design surrounds us constantly and directly influences our behavior. Embrace the “inner values”—become an interior designer and learn to create the ideal environment for every situation!

    The degree programme

Interior design involves the creative, technical, and economic planning of interior spaces, spatial layouts, and furnishings; the boundaries between architecture and product design are fluid. The program therefore addresses spatial concepts in existing buildings as well as temporary structures, lighting design, and object design. The curriculum includes visualization and CAD, structural systems and building materials, lighting design, as well as art and cultural studies, economics, and law. At the end of the bachelor’s program, students develop an individual, independent design project.

    Meeting place: Room

The fields of interior design are diverse and wide-ranging, with blurred boundaries between them and other disciplines. However, it is always about combining artistic design with technical expertise – and it is always about space. Everything we do takes place within a space: space is the setting for human interaction. We now spend 90% of our time indoors. This makes it increasingly important to design these spaces optimally. It is a major challenge, not least because our working and living environments are changing rapidly and becoming ever more complex – innovative and well-trained interior designers are therefore increasingly in demand.

The NDU is currently the only university in Austria to offer interior design as a separate degree programme.

    Course Highlights

NDU Benefits: Practical focus and business relevance

The combination of academic training and practical experience lies at the heart of the degree programme at NDU. The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of contemporary theory, equips students to develop solutions independently and to lead interdisciplinary teams. Tackling practical design tasks allows you to develop both your technical skills and your individual creativity: this leads you to your own personal forms of expression and to a sound understanding of spatial relationships and their design.

To help you tackle the complex challenges of the profession, you will work on real-world project briefs from the business sector throughout your degree: you will develop genuine solutions that are implemented and used by the client. In doing so, your academic training will make you aware of the needs of the business world, whilst ensuring that you create solutions that are both aesthetically and environmentally sustainable. You will be supervised by lecturers with practical experience and renowned guest speakers; this means you will be directly integrated into a valuable professional network right from the start.

    Projects

    Job and career opportunities

The fields of application are numerous and varied: residential, commercial, hospitality, retail, leisure... As an interior designer of the future, you will design offices, bars and hotel lobbies, oversee shop design, and wow visitors with innovative exhibition architecture.

Career opportunities are available in design and architecture firms, in manufacturing companies (e.g. furniture manufacturers, and producers of exhibition and retail display systems), in retail and sales, in the cultural sector (stage and exhibition design) and, of course, as a freelance creative professional.

    Entry requirements

The entry requirement for the Bachelor’s degree programme in Graphic and Information Design is either proof of a general university entrance qualification or exceptional artistic and creative aptitude.

A further entry requirement is the completion of an entrance examination, during which your artistic and creative aptitude will be assessed. For the entrance examination, you must submit a portfolio containing 15 to 20 pieces of work (drawings, photographs, projects, etc.). For the Interior Design programme, the portfolio should include not only three-dimensional room views but also two-dimensional floor plans, sections and elevations, as well as perspective and freehand drawings. Free artistic works, photographs and sketches of buildings, cities, travels, etc. should round off the portfolio.

The portfolio must be brought in physical form on the day of the entrance examination and sent in digital form in advance. You will be notified of the details for this after registering for one of the entrance examination dates.

You can usually choose from three dates for the entrance exam.
