    Design, Craft & Material Culture

    Design. Research. Implement

Get your hands dirty? Yes! Let your mind run wild in the heat of the creative process? Oh yes! Connecting the hand that creates with the mind that thinks – ideally through your own heart’s blood? That too, yes? Then this course is exactly right for you – whether you’ve got your A-levels, a master craftsman’s certificate or a vocational qualification under your belt. As a professionally trained designer with technical expertise, you’ll combine theory and practice, reflection with construction, and the future with tradition.

    The degree programme

The course meets you where you are: if you’ve already completed a craft apprenticeship, you’ll be taught the skills needed for professional design work. If you’re a school leaver, you’ll gain a solid grounding in woodworking or ceramics through a supplementary course. Either way, you’ll acquire practical product design and craft skills as well as business management knowledge.
You will engage with both design research and design practice. You will explore ‘product and consumer culture’ and future-defining topics such as ‘ecology and sustainability’ and ‘digitalisation’, discovering how design is constantly evolving against the backdrop of social and technological developments (such as numerically controlled design and production techniques like CNC milling, 3D printing, AI, etc.). Through active project work, you can explore the latest developments in the design and processing of a wide variety of materials, experience an open and process-oriented approach to design, and pursue your own individual design approaches.

To better shape your career, in your second year of study you can choose between specialisations in Business Administration and Cultural Studies, thereby preparing yourself either for future management roles in medium-sized industrial companies, for self-employment in the creative industries, or for a subsequent Master’s degree.

    Design meets craftsmanship

Have you completed a craft apprenticeship and want to take your practical skills in a new direction, or take things a step further? Are you a school leaver or university graduate looking to combine your theoretical knowledge with your creative skills? In either case, you’ve come to the right place. We combine product design and craftsmanship, theory and practice in a forward-looking way within an exceptional bachelor’s degree programme.

NDU Benefits: A real, creative environment

Studying at NDU is grounded in practical experience: numerous partnerships between the university and the business world allow you to experience the latest standards in craft and industrial production at first hand. Lectures and guest critiques by renowned experts provide a constant stream of insights into new developments and relevant topics. Excursions and studio visits offer valuable insights into your future career and help you build a stronger network within the creative industry.

Whatever field you ultimately specialise in and whatever educational background you come from: we want to nurture your individual creative development and your specific talents.

    Job and career opportunities

The unique combination of a bachelor’s degree with practical craftsmanship makes you a sought-after candidate for management roles in medium-sized companies within the manufacturing industry. Design studios also value this dual expertise, which combines creative and technical know-how at a high level. The path to self-employment – where you can give free rein to your creativity as a designer or craftsperson – is also open to you. Last but not least, you can either build on your basic academic training by further developing your expertise through a Master’s degree at Austrian or international universities, or take a master craftsman’s examination.
