    BA Graphic- & Information- design

If your creative passion lies in typography, illustration, photography, advertising, user interface design, branding or data visualisation, and you want to play an active role in shaping the future, you’ve come to the right place. Precisely because AI is becoming increasingly intertwined with our daily lives, there is a need for creative, responsible and critically minded designers. The Bachelor’s degree programme in Graphic & Information Design addresses precisely this need, offering a contemporary and forward-looking curriculum that equips you, as a budding designer, with the skills, mindsets and tools to confidently master the creative challenges and opportunities of this AI-driven age.

    The degree pProgramme

The Graphic & Information Design degree programme introduces you to the skills of digital and analogue design and creativity techniques. Throughout the curriculum, you will be guided to closely interweave technology and craftsmanship, innovation and tradition, and to experiment with the full range of manual, digital and AI-based tools. In doing so, you will work on logo development, corporate identity, editorial design, packaging design and advertising campaigns. You will create infographics and visual storytelling solutions for online and print, explore the possibilities of generative and AI-driven design, and devise interactive strategies for websites, apps and user interfaces. Thanks to close links with industry and work on real-world projects, by the end of your degree you will be well equipped to meet the demands of the professional world.

Why is it worth studying graphic and information design, particularly in the age of AI?

Because innovation is only possible with determined, imaginative and creative minds.
It is precisely because of AI that studying graphic and information design is more important than ever. For whilst AI can design and carry out commands, and can reproduce, combine and copy existing work, it has now become a central tool in design. What it cannot do, however, is recognise meaning, nor understand, evaluate or communicate it in a meaningful way, let alone empathise with irony, humour, context, semantics, cultural nuances, empathy and interpersonal communication. Yet it is precisely these aspects that are essential in our communication-driven society for conveying products, messages and ideas and providing guidance. That is why we will continue to need creative, unconventional and imaginative people who act consciously, reflectively and responsibly; who can use AI meaningfully and confidently; who can evaluate, assess and curate it; and who are capable of making creative decisions

    Course Highlights

NDU Benefits: Practical focus and versatility

The course equips you with a wide range of creative, practical and technical skills needed to enjoy long-term success as a designer. Through a range of elective modules, you have the opportunity to acquire further skills: whatever area you wish to specialise in, there is a wide range of options available to broaden and deepen your expertise. As part of the so-called Future Lab – an NDU-owned platform that connects companies, students and lecturers – you can work on real-world projects in interdisciplinary teams, develop creative solutions and gain initial experience in collaborating with clients. Throughout your studies, you will be mentored by internationally active experts with practical experience who will provide constant support for your individual development.

    Job and career opportunities

Demand for skilled graphic designers remains consistently high. NDU graduates have the distinct advantage of not only mastering their ‘craft’ to perfection, but also approaching tasks with conceptual confidence, making them highly sought-after experts. After graduation, there are excellent career prospects in advertising, marketing or multimedia agencies, design studios, publishing houses, TV and radio stations, as well as in the graphic design departments of companies and corporations. Many of our graduates also choose to pursue a career as freelancers and prove to be highly successful founders and entrepreneurs.

    Entry requirements

The entry requirement for the Bachelor’s degree programme in Graphic and Information Design is either proof of a general university entrance qualification or exceptional artistic and creative aptitude.

A further entry requirement is the completion of an entrance examination, during which your artistic and creative aptitude will be assessed. For the entrance examination, you must submit a portfolio containing 15 to 20 pieces of work (series count as one piece), which must be uploaded digitally in advance, together with a CV and a motivation letter.

For the Graphic & Information Design programme, drawings such as nature or nude studies; graphic assignments that combine image and text, such as posters or book covers; as well as analogue graphic experiments are recommended. Simple data visualisations in the form of infographics, logo designs and calligraphic exercises are also very welcome. Furthermore, sketchbooks are highly encouraged.

The portfolio should reflect as comprehensive and individual a picture as possible of your current creative, drawing and technical skills, and demonstrate that you approach design with curiosity, courage and a critical eye.

The portfolio must be brought in physical form on the day of the entrance examination and sent in digital form in advance. You will be notified of the details for this after registering for one of the entrance examination dates.

You can usually choose from three dates for the entrance exam.
