The Management by Design programme bridges two worlds that only appear separate at first glance. A transformed understanding of ‘design’ plays a crucial role here; it no longer concerns merely the shaping of objects, their function or their interaction with users. Design, understood as a way of thinking and acting, as a strategy for problem-solving, creates a new approach to management. As a ‘design thinker’, you can bring fresh ideas to any kind of business!
Design Thinking Process based on the Stanford School
Empathy
Empathy is the foundation of human-centred design. The problems you want to solve are rarely your own, but those of specific users. Build empathy for your users by getting to know their values.
Define
In the definition phase, you break down your empathy findings into needs and insights. Based on your understanding of the users and their environment, you formulate an actionable problem statement.
Ideate
Ideation is the phase in which radical design alternatives are generated. Ideation is a process in which one takes a ‘broad-based’ approach to concepts and outcomes – a phase of ‘spreading out’ rather than ‘focusing’. The aim of ideation is to explore a broad solution space – both a large quantity and a wide variety of ideas. From this vast pool of ideas, you can create prototypes to test with users.
Prototype
Prototyping brings ideas out of your head and into the world. A prototype can be anything that takes on a physical form – a wall covered in Post-it notes, a role-play activity or an object. In the early stages, prototypes should be created at low cost and with minimal effort, so that you can learn quickly and explore possibilities.
Test
Testing is an opportunity to gather feedback, refine solutions and learn more about users.
