Sign Painting Workshop

Hand lettering and sign painting are experiencing a real renaissance these days. The typical vintage fonts of American advertising from the 1950s - also called casual, script and block - are often used for business signs and interior design, but also for digital type design.

The New Design University (NDU) St. Pölten invites you to the »Sign Painting Workshop«! The four-day, practice-oriented specialist workshop deals with the technology and aesthetics of vintage letters. The aim of the workshop is to draw and develop fonts independently, and to transfer them to all possible surfaces.

At the beginning of the workshop the participants will be sketching in order to quickly and easily learn to draw the basic shapes and features of the casual and script fonts with a brush pen and pencil. This will serve as basis for desiging typical, traditional sign painting fonts and help the participants to switch from the felt pen to the brush. Subsequently, the group will work more intensely on the technique of writing itself, in order to be able to apply the Block, Casual & Script fonts vertically and on any surface with special brushes and enamel colors.

The workshop is aimed at specialists, students and graduates who have basic experience in typeface design. The number of participants is limited to 15 people.
